Noun

Etymology: From Proto-West Germanic *fasō, of uncertain origin. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *pē̆s- (“to blow”), which could be related to Polish pasmo (“band, strip, streak”). But, according to Kroonen, this is at odds with the spelling variants *fesōn and *fisōn, and he prefers a connection with Ancient Greek πτύσσω (ptússō, “I fold”), from a Pre-Germanic root *fisan-, from Proto-Indo-European *tpis-e- << *tpis-.
